Known for its multicultural community and independent businesses, the Glasgow neighbourhood has become a popular destination in the city’s Southside.
Govanhill’s mix of cultures, food and independent businesses has helped put Glasgow on the international map.
The Southside area was placed fifth in Time Out’s 2026 list of the 40 coolest neighbourhoods worldwide, making it the highest ranked neighbourhood in the UK.
Time Out’s ranking considers factors including food and drink, nightlife, independent businesses, liveability and community.
Govanhill is home to a growing collection of bookshops, bars, cafes and community spaces, including Glasgow Zine Library, Category is Books and Adrian’s Bar.
Victoria Road, one of Govanhill’s main streets, is home to a mixture of businesses and communities, including Pakistani and Indian restaurants, Irish pubs and shops representing a wide array of cultures.
For many decades Govanhill has been one of the city’s most diverse areas, with its multicultural character continuing to play an important role in everyday life.
Govanhill also has a strong community events programme, including the annual Govanhill International Carnival and Festival, which celebrates local culture through activities including talks, exhibitions and a parade.
For Glasgow, the ranking puts an area of the city’s Southside on an international list alongside neighbourhoods in cities such as Seoul, Athens, Los Angeles and Rome.
With its mix of food, culture, businesses and diverse communities, Govanhill’s latest recognition highlights how the area has developed while holding on to its unique character.
