The 47-year-old disappeared in the Malawian city of Blantyre earlier this month.
Nusrat Osman, was taken by four men on September 11. Osman, from Leicester, was abducted during the day in the Mount Pleasant area of the city. Malawi police launched a search for Osman following her disappearance and had offered a reward for any information that could aid their investigation.
According to the police, officers exchanged gunfire with the suspected kidnappers during their rescue operation. The Malawi Police Service said: “The criminals got shot and were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to the injuries.”
Osman was freed on Thursday and reunited with her family and taken to hospital for treatment and mental health assessments.
Her younger brother, Shobi Jiwa, praised the efforts of the Malawian police and also paid tribute to Deputy Inspector General Dr Mlowoka Noel Kayira after he was shot during the operation. Jiwa has described him as his family’s “hero” for putting his own life on the line.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was aware of reports that a British national had been abducted in Malawi and said it was in contact with the local authorities.
The police have not released the identities of the four suspected kidnappers and have not disclosed how officers located the group.
