British student gets stuck in Pakistan after he runs out of money

Miles Routledge, a 22-year-old student from Loughborough University has said that he is trapped in Pakistan after travelling to the borders to save his tour guide from a previous trip.

The Physics student has been known to Google the most dangerous places on Earth and travels to these locations despite government advice against doing so. As a result, he ended up in Afghanistan last summer when the Taliban overthrew the ruling Afghan government under Ashraf Ghani. This thrill-seeking side of him attracted a lot of criticism on social media last year.

Routledge now claims that the tour guide he had gone to “rescue” got cold feet and while he was crossing Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, he was caught by the security forces and his plan to cycle through the territory was halted.

He posted online, writing: “I don’t think you guys understand but I can’t afford any more travel.” He added that he spent more than 400 hours and £15,000 to help the tour guide, whom the Taliban was planning to kill for having helped the US forces. He said, “Now that he’s backed out at the last possible minute he’s ruined me, I’m insanely pessimistic right now.”

Routledge now plans to go to Afghanistan to make more social media content, take on some charity work and take a selfie with members of the Taliban, despite running low on money.
