Virat Kohli announces his retirement from Test match cricket

Cricket legend Virat Kohli (pictured above) has retired immediately from Test match cricket. After 123 matches played for India and an impressive 9,230 runs completed, the legend bows out with an impressive Test career.
He is India’s most successful captain, winning 40 of his 68 Test matches. Kohli posted on Instagram to his 272m followers saying, “Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It has tested me, shaped me and taught me lessons I will carry for life. I will always look back at my Test career with a smile.”
In 2024, the cricket icon retired from T20 internationals, following India’s World Cup win against South Africa in Barbados.
The former India captain has broken records throughout his career and has put his name in the discussion for one of his nation’s best cricketers of all-time. In 2018-19, as Test captain of his country, he led India to a famous win against Australia in their home ground in Sydney, for the first time in history.
Between the years 2016 and 2019, the 36-year-old scored a staggering 16 of his 30 test centuries, which highlights his impressive performances during the period for India.
During Test matches, Virat Kohli hit an eye-watering 1027 fours, in the 123 games played throughout his career and his average runs per Test match is 46.85. When facing against Sri Lanka, Kohli has his best batting average vs. any nation, which is a huge 67.8.
India’s captain Rohit Sharma announced on Wednesday that he would also retire from Test matches but like Kohli, he will still play one-day Internationals. Sharma picked up the armband after Kohli decided to step down from the role in 2022.
The news has hit the headlines around the world and marks the start of something new in India for cricket. The India team that will face England at Headingley in June will have a different feel and look to it, due to upcoming personal changes to the side.
On social media, plenty of fans, former teammates, friends, opposition players and pundits have spoken about the news and have credited Kohli on his remarkable test career for India. One which started in 2011 and finishes in 2025, it has been a superb journey for the batter. His final Test fixture came against Australia in Sydney, but his team were unfortunately beaten by the hosts.
Despite the world superstar retiring from different cricket competitions, he is not slowing down in his ability. Virat Kohli is currently fourth in the IPL for runs this season, with a total of 505. Suryakumar Yadav is first in the league, but he only has five more runs than Kohli who will be aiming to finish first this season.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter has hit 18 sixes during the 2025 IPL campaign, still with the possibility of playing five more matches. The 2008 league debutant is in his 17th season in the IPL and his team are second in the table.
RCB have won all their last four matches and are level on points with table toppers Gujarat Titans. RCB have won all their six away matches in the league this season but have only picked up two home wins out of five matches played.
