Unprecedented attack takes place at former mayor of Keighley’s house
Former mayor of Keighley, Fulzar Ahmed, was victim of a recent attack that took place at his home while three of his children were asleep upstairs.
The attack, which took place at 1.30am on May 6, allegedly involved “a gang of four or five men” according to Ahmed, who used bricks to smash several windows at his house. Ahmed said that the attack was “politically motivated” given that it occurred a day after the local elections.
Ahmed was Keighley’s Town Mayor from 2018 to 2019 and is the secretary Labour party’s Keighley branch. Speaking of the attack, he said, “To target a family home at night, when kids are inside sleeping, is horrendous. As someone who has been involved in politics for a long time and is still active, I think it was definitely politically motivated. Incidents like this will put people off standing for public office and ultimately damage our democracy. This is a direct attack on the democratic process and undermines the principles of free speech, democratic engagement and debate.”
