Rapist doctor who tied and gagged victim before threatening to release video jailed for 11 years

A doctor who raped a woman and subsequently threatened to share a video of the assault has stated that he has no interest in the outcome announced by a medical tribunal.
Vibhor Garg, 37, of Wigan has been jailed for 11 years for the heinous crime and banned from working in medicine by a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service panel with immediate effect.
He was branded him to be a “selfish” man whose behaviour was a threat to the trust that the patients and the public have placed on the profession.
Garg qualified as a doctor after graduating from the University of Baroda in the state of Gujarat, India. He was quick to dismiss the panel and said: “I am not interested in (the) outcome of the case as I will be deported out (of) the country at the end of my sentence. I no longer wish to stay and practice medicine in the UK, even if given the opportunity, due to stressful personal events … I do not wish to attend hearing.”
According to South Yorkshire Police, the training fellow in orthopaedics met his victim in Sheffield, and subjected her to the horrifying ordeal while they were both residing at the same location during the night. He forcibly restrained her, brandished scissors as a threat, sealed her mouth with tape and attempted to bind her hands behind her back before violently raping her.
The woman lodged a complaint the next day. He was arrested but released on bail pending further inquiries. After this, Garg started threatening the victim by repeatedly contacting her and told her that he would release the recording of the rape and kill himself if she did not withdraw her allegations, the panel was told.
He was found and apprehended in Bournemouth in September last year. He was subsequently charged and detained, as stated by the police. In February, he entered a guilty plea to charges of rape, oral rape, and perverting the course of justice, and was subsequently sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court.
The medical tribunal cited the sentencing remarks of the judge, who told Garg: “This was not a random, spur-of-the-moment incident. This was not you just looking at her and deciding, ‘I’m having my way’. This was far, far more than that. You grabbed hold of her. You then tried to bind her. You tried to stop her from being able to scream by taping her mouth. You tried to blindfold her, and then you raped her.”
The judge added: “It’s difficult to see, from any point of view, how when a woman is crying and pleading for her mum, as (the victim) has graphically described in her statement to the court, how anyone can get pleasure under those circumstances but, you did, because you continued.”
The judge, who strongly criticised Garg’s self-centered actions as “utterly deplorable,” noted that the woman could not confirm whether the attack had actually been recorded, but the fear of such a possibility was deeply terrifying to her. Following the sentencing, Investigating Officer PC Natasha Dawson commended the victim, stating, “This was an extremely violent incident and distressing, and the bravery she has shown throughout has been commendable.”
A spokesperson for the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where Garg was working, admitted that he was “absent from work when the trust was made aware of the allegations and never returned.” They added: “ The trust immediately reported Dr Garg to the GMC (General Medical Council) and he was subsequently dismissed in line with the trust’s disciplinary policy.”
