Chairman and managing director of Indian multinational conglomerate Reliance Industries limited, Mukesh Ambani, has entered the race for the takeover bid of world-renowned English football club Liverpool FC, reports have stated.
The football club has been put up on sale by its current owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who bought the Merseyside club in October 2010. The bid is being overlooked by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, with FSG selling the English Premier League giant for £4 billion, The Mirror has reported.
Ambani, who is currently the eighth richest person in the world, has expressed his interest in buying the club. However, sources associated with Reliance Industries have not confirmed the developments yet.
A statement released by FSG read: “There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs and inevitably, we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.
“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions, we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.” Ambani’s company currently owns the cricket team Mumbai Indians, which plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) held every year since its inception in 2008. It also runs the popular Indian Super League football event and is the commercial partner of the All India Football Federation.
