Film ‘Lagaan’ to debut as a Broadway Show in the UK

Bollywood blockbuster Lagaan, which recently celebrated 21 years of its release on 15 June, is set to be adapted as a Broadway Show in the UK.

The iconic 2001 film which was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starred Amir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne, along with some legendary actors was the third Indian film to ever be nominated for the Oscars and since then has developed a cult fanbase across the country and the world.

An industry source informed that on the special occasion of the film’s release anniversary, it will soon be adapted as a West End show in the UK for fans to attend and enjoy the story in a different setting and form.

According to many sources, various leading producers from the UK have requested Amir Khan Productions which owns the rights of the film, to allow them to showcase it in the country as a Broadway Show.

A spokesperson said, “Aamir Khan’s team is yet to make a final decision about it. The makers have different plans which include doing a worldwide tour of the show that will feature a completely original cast.”

Lagaan, a film which is close to the hearts of many, is set in the small drought-ridden village of Champaner, India during the pre-independence era. It effectively combines the problems of the poor villagers who are forced to pay taxes to the British, with the sport of Cricket and depicts how they emerge victorious by learning and mastering the game in the end. The film’s music, composed by Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman, is considered to one of the best albums to this day.

Many are looking forward for the see the Broadway Show based on the film which won several highly respected awards and accolades in the country.
