The British Youth International College (BYITC) has announced the 10 winners of its International Maths Olympiad competition. 

The BYITC International Maths Olympiad is a platform where students worldwide can participate and challenge themselves with a self-assessment of their mental arithmetic skills. It offers a valuable opportunity to gauge their current abilities while working to overcome any gaps or shortcomings. 

Additionally, it serves as an excellent motivator, fostering healthy competition among participants.

Out of thousands of students who took part, 7 participants from England emerged victorious:

• Sophia Lagdami Hassan, 8, from Cambridgeshire, who attends Newark Hill Academy, has won the level 2 challenge.
• Kiyaan Mangukia, 8, from West Yorkshire, who attends Kirkstall Valley Primary School, has won the level 3 challenge.
• Kaushik Nagargoje, 8, from Tyne and Wear,, who attends Brunton First School has won the level 4 challenge.
• Trisha Patel, 8, from Essex, who attends Bonnygate Primary School has won the level 5 challenge.
• Thea Sivanesan, 9, from Wales, who attends Litchard Primary School has won the level 7 challenge.
• Aadhav Joshua Dinesh, 10, from West Midlands, who attends Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, has won the level 8 challenge.
• Catherine James, 11, from Norfolk, who attends Newark Hill Academy, has won the level 9 challenge.

Sophia’s parents said: We are incredibly happy and proud of our daughter’s accomplishments. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to BYITC for their guidance and support throughout her journey, as well as for providing such a wonderful platform.”

Catherine’s parents added: “This is a moment of immense pride for our entire family. We are grateful to BYITC for providing such a wonderful platform to Catherine. Her love and aptitude for maths have grown immensely after joining this programme”

Aadhav’s parents said: “Aadhav is thrilled with his victory, which has greatly boosted his confidence. This achievement was made possible by the unique teaching methods and consistent efforts of his teachers. Aadhav enjoys his classes and eagerly looks forward to participating and giving his best in future challenges.”

Now in its fifth year, the BYITC Maths Olympiad has empowered hundreds of students to test their mental maths aptitude and skills by offering a user-friendly platform for an exciting challenge.

This groundbreaking challenge is based on the school’s innovative Abacus Maths programme. Participants faced a total of 50 questions, with results determined by both accuracy and time. The questions were designed to reflect the complexities and advanced levels appropriate for each category.

Students utilised concepts such as finger calculations, Abacus, and Mental theory. The top performers across each of the ten levels of BYITC Supermaths training were awarded certificates and prizes for their impressive arithmetic skills.

BYITC’s Founder, Dr Rashmi Mantri, stated: “The International Maths Olympiad continues to be a success, and students love to compete in it each year. It was created to identify, assess, and celebrate students who demonstrate extraordinary Abacus Maths skills.”

Everyone, especially children, learns best when both their imagination and logical thinking skills are fully engaged in a problem or challenge. Adding a fun element of competition encourages youngsters to make significant progress in their performances”

She added: “As a child-centric organisation, BYITC is dedicated to providing suitable platforms to help children reach their full potential. In our ongoing efforts to give back to society, BYITC regularly organises free events such as Olympiads, workshops, masterclasses, and educational webinars, all of which greatly benefit the children.”

A key element of BYITC’s approach to teaching maths, Abacus Maths training is delivered to students through the Supermaths Abacus programmes which is the world’s first game based learning application. 

Children are taught to calculate sums by visualising an Abacus board and using their fingers to manipulate imaginary beads. This technique enables them to perform rapid mental arithmetic while also stimulating cognitive development, improving memory and focus, and enhancing problem-solving skills.

Glasgow-based BYITC is now the UK’s largest provider of Abacus Maths classes and creator of the world’s first digital Abacus maths learning App.

Rashmi added: “By participating in the National Maths Challenge, we hope our Supermaths students will deepen their interest in maths and enthusiasm for number crunching. The challenge not only enhances their arithmetic skills, speed, and accuracy, but also boosts their confidence.”
