21-year-old Tisha Pruthi has become a sensation on Tiktok for her custom-made jewellery which includes bracelets, necklaces and rings.
The young entrepreneur, who currently resides in Wolverhampton, West Midlands with her family, started the business under the brand name ‘Chikaag’ in 2020 during lockdown, when the Covid-19 pandemic had forced people to stay in the confines of their homes. She ordered stock worth £200 from Amazon to be able to make the personalised jewellery pieces and learned to engrave pictures and letters with stamps and a hammer by watching videos on YouTube.
Pruthi always wanted to own a successful business and was very ambitious about it, which led her to defer a year at university and focus her time and effort into making jewellery. However, her journey was not devoid of hurdles. She said, “I always imagined myself running a business, so I decided to just do it. For the first five months, I paid £200 for my initial stock and then got no orders. I was so stressed, thinking I’d made a mistake and wasted my time and money.”
Despite getting no orders for months, the businesswoman did not lose hope and started posting on Tiktok and Instagram about her products instead of choosing the route of traditional marketing. Soon, her videos spread across the internet, and she was being flooded with orders. She adds, “When my videos started to go viral, I gained lots of followers who converted into customers. Suddenly I was getting so many orders, it was amazing. For anyone wanting to take the risk in starting a business, I’d say do it. If you want to do it, work hard and you’ll get what you want.”
Pruthi has also launched an online store where customers can easily order handmade and affordable jewellery. She also purchased an engraving machine with her earnings after the business began to take off. But, most of her work is completed in her bedroom at her family home.
Through her business, she managed to earn £13,500 in May this year but hopes to make her business even bigger by bringing in six figures in the future. She also plans to go to University College London in September this year to study Information Management for Business, but will continue to work on and grow her business alongside her studies.
