South Asian Brits win big at General Election
Posted On July , 2024

Four South Asian candidates, all of Pakistani origins, have secured seats in the British Parliament following the General Election on July 4th. This is a monumental moment for the British Asian community, as this victory shows the growing representation of ethnic minorities in UK politics.
Dr Zubir Ahmed, a Glasgow-based transplant surgeon, has secured victory for the Labour Party in Glasgow by winning a seat for Glasgow Southwest. Ahmed’s seat means that Labour has created a stronghold within Glasgow, as the Party has won all the seats within the Glasgow area. Dr Ahmed focused his campaign on the development of the community and social justice, which appealed to voters.
Naushabah Khan, another Labour Party member, secured a seat for Gillingham & Rainham with 15,562 votes from the Conservative Party’s Rehman Chishti with 11,590 votes. Her victory is vital for Labour, as it demonstrates the shifting political landscape favouring the party. Her campaign focused on improving the healthcare system and economic reforms, which led to Khan gaining the majority of support from her constituency.
Conservative Party’s Saqib Bhatti won in Meridan and Solihull East with 16,792 votes to Labour’s Sarah Alan’s 12,208. This is Bhatti’s re-election into the seat, and his advocating for local business and economic growth is why he can maintain a strong connection with his constituents and gain their votes.
Finally, Dr Rosena Allin-Khan secured another victory for Labour in Tooting with a dominating 29,209 votes to Conservatives’ Ethan Brooks with only 9,722 votes. This is also her re-election into the seat, but this reinforces her position as an influential political figure in the area. Khan’s consistent focus on healthcare and her work as an NHS doctor aided her continued success as she grew the trust and support she received from the constituents.
These four new appointees strengthen the trend of South Asian representation in Britain and demonstrate the importance of diversity within society and the political world.
