Sadiq Khan pledges to demand new powers and more funding from newly elected Labour Government
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, has promised to lobby the incoming Labour Government for new powers and billions more in funding for affordable housing in London.
The mayor stated that, with the Conservatives now out of power, it will be easier for him to operate as the mayor of London as “constant obstacles” will not be in his way anymore.
However, he also spoke about continuing to argue for more funding to help London’s housing crisis. Khan has been fighting in recent months for a £2.2 billion package to boost homebuilding.
Khan said: “What the Labour party has said in its manifesto is they want to build 1.5 million homes in the first parliamentary term, a large chunk of that should be in London.
“What I’ve been pleased about over the last few months is, with mayors across the country, meeting regularly with Keir Starmer, Angela Rayner, Rachel Reeves.
“I’m hoping that over the next few days, Keir Starmer, as the new Prime Minister, will meet us to discuss what powers and resources can be devolved.”
Khan hopes that new powers, specifically skills training and housing, will be given to mayors and regional authorities under the new Labour government.
When Khan was asked about the general election results, he said: “These results, literally, are unbelievable. In my wildest dreams, I couldn’t have imagined, if you and I were speaking in 2019, that within one parliamentary term, we’d be not just forming the next Government but with the majority that we will have.
“This has been the best result for Labour ever in London; there are no Conservative MPs in central London or inner London.
“It’s a great night for Labour.”
