After Liz Truss’s resignation on Thursday, 20 October, the UK has witnessed political instability like never before.
The prime minister’s resignation came just six weeks of being appointed after a rather long-drawn PM race, making her the shortest-serving PM in British history. In her speech, she confirmed that a new PM will be appointed within a week to replace her and take the country forward through one of the worst economic crisis it has ever seen.
For a country that is heading into recession, it is unclear as to who will be appointed next. However, several polls have revealed that Rishi Sunak is the clear favourite, given his accurate predictions about how Truss’s plans and leadership would lead the country to an even worse situation than before.
However, given Sunak’s alleged betrayal of former PM Boris Johnson, there was much anger against him within the party for triggering the rebellion that eventually led to Johnson getting ousted. It also resulted in the members of the party ignoring Sunak’s repeated warnings that Truss’s plans would lead to the markets losing confidence.
It is, thus, unclear how the situation will pan out in the next few days and whether Sunak will indeed emerge as the next leader of the Conservative Party.
Other candidates with a large number of support include Penny Mordaunt, who was placed third in the PM race and is considered to have a “broad appeal” by a lawmaker. Jeremy Hunt, Ben Wallace and Boris Johnson are also popular candidates.
