Protesters face trial a year after Kenmure Street protests

Dubbed as “The Kenmure Street Three”, three people including a 23-year-old woman and two men, aged 31 and 32, were arrested and charged in May 2021 for public order offences during the protests against two Indian men being deported by the Home Office. Now, they face prosecution and are still fighting charges.

Police Scotland had admitted that it sent a report to the procurator fiscal last year as a result of which the three were informed earlier this year that State intends to go ahead with the prosecutions. Their trial dates have been set for 3^rd and 4^th of August.

Sumit Sehdev, a chef, and Lakhvir Singh, a mechanic, were successfully able to stay after an eight-hour standoff between the police and the protesters. However, a year later, the protesters have been in a long battle against the police.

One of the protesters present at the scene said, “The protesters who got arrested did absolutely nothing different to the rest of us. It seemed like the police just picked a few people at random to remind everyone that they could, and very much would, arrest us. It seemed unnecessary and brutal as the whole thing was completely peaceful.”
