Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt shatters box office records worldwide

Ram Setu, starring Akshay Kumar, and Thank God, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Ajay Devgn, were two brand-new Bollywood films that released in theatres on Diwali. However, they have faced stiff competition in the UK from of The Legend of Maula Jatt, a Pakistani film that has received massive acclaim worldwide.

The film, starring superstars including Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Humaima Mallick, Hamza Ali Abbasi, was released two weeks ago and is still the top grosser at the UK and US box offices with respective approximate earnings of £40,600 and £49,000 as of last week.

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, The Legend of Maula Jatt, which released in 56 screens across the UK, drew a whopping £40,600 on its 13^th day after release. At the same time, Thank God, collected only £16,900 and Ram Setu collected £14,400 from 95 screens approximately.

Rumoured to be Pakistan’s highest budget film, it is the remake a cult classic from 1979, revolving around the story of a young boy, Maula Jatt, who flees to a poor village after a rival clan kills his parents.

The much-anticipated film directed by Bilal Lashari, has created history after breaking box-office records in Pakistan after becoming the highest grossing film ever and reaching the 100 crore mark in ten days. The film is also reported to be massively popular at the UAE box office becoming coming at the top as compared to other releases and has achieved the sixth position in Canada.

Director Bilal Lashari spoke to Deadline about the overwhelming success and said, “I’m beyond overwhelmed by the love the film has received from audiences and critics alike the world over. We are so proud that The Legend of Maula Jatt has been instrumental in putting Pakistan-made cinema on the global map as it continues to win over hearts in theatres across the world.”
