Members of the Belfast Asian Women’s Academy participate in the Belfast City Marathon
Members of the Belfast Asian Women’s Academy (BAWA), a non-profit voluntary grassroots organisation formed aimed at inspiring and empowering women, took part in the Mash Direct Belfast City Marathon.
15 women from three teams took part for the third time this year. They were also joined by local ladies – Jamie-Lee Peden of Belfast South Community Resources and Leah Wright of Belfast Homeless Services.
Speaking on behalf of BAWA, founder Ana Chandran said, “I first took part in the Belfast City Marathon in 2018. I had a great experience and wanted to share it with others so I formed teams for the relay to represent BAWA.
“We are making a difference by encouraging women to participate in the Belfast City Marathon. We first took part in 2021 with 10 ladies most of them running for the first time. This year we had 4 debut runners of which 2 had never run before,” she added.
This marathon was BAWA member Rucha Khandare’s first and she managed to complete her 4.1 miles leg. Khandare said, “I am so delighted that I took part in this relay and will do it again. I never thought I could run, thank you to BAWA for giving me this opportunity.”
Another runner Prachi Shah said, “I never ran before and I cannot believe I completed 5.3 miles. I will cherish this memories forever.”
The BAWA team hopes to inspire and empower more women to take part in the Marathon next year.
