Man jailed for over a decade after being found guilty of abuse against two girls

Sajidur Rashid Tipu, 51, of Canton Street, Poplar, was sentenced on Friday, 28 June, at Snaresbrook Crown Court to 12 years and six months in prison while also being served a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 15-year restraining order against the two victims.
He was found guilty on 15 counts of historic child sex abuse against two girls who were known to him.
The Met police have been aiming to maintain their commitment to protecting vulnerable women and children from harmful predators, and they also continue to encourage victims to report sexual abuse, whether recent or not.
Tipu was investigated by the Met police in February 2019 after one of his victims reported the crimes at Bethnal Green Police Station, telling officers that throughout her childhood, she was repeatedly harassed and abused by Tipu; after witnessing one of Tipu’s victims come forward, the other girl contacted the police shortly after.
Tipu was arrested in February 2021 upon arriving at Heathrow Airport from Bangladesh.
A dedicated specialist officer was the point of contact for both victims during the duration of the investigation, reassuring and caring for both girls while giving the comfort to talk freely and advising them on getting support from charities such as Nia, an East London rape crisis charity.
Met officers worked closely with the victims during the entire investigation, recording and detailing over fifteen years of sexual abuse that both girls experienced from Tipu that helped in creating a strong and thorough case that resulted in Tipu’s sentencing.
Detective Constable Paul Clare, who was the lead detective in the case with a speciality in child exploitation, said: “I want to acknowledge the bravery of these two young women who came forward, and their courage has been compelling throughout the process.
“This offending spanned over formative years of these girls’ lives and caused them intense psychological harm. I’m glad Tipu has now seen justice.
“I hope this is a sign for any other victim out there who have experienced exploitation in their youth that they can and should come forward. We will do everything we can for you, and you will be listened to and supported.”
