Muhammad Abid (pictured above), 33, from Newham, has been arrested for breaking the terms of his Terrorism National Order after an investigation by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command found that he had failed to notify police officers about a bank account he had opened and a vehicle that had been deregistered from his possession.   

Abid was arrested and sentenced in January 2018 for failing to disclose information about an act of terrorism that he was aware of. He served four years and three months in prison before being released in August 2021. As part of his sentencing, Abid was also served a Terrorism Notification Order that he was required to obey for ten years.  

After his release, officers maintained contact with Abid to ensure he obeyed the Order. However, in March 2022, officers became concerned over Abid’s lack of communication and engagement with them, which resulted in two searches being carried out on two addresses in London that were linked to Abid.  

The searches revealed evidence that suggested Abid had breached the terms of the Order. After a further investigation, Abid was again arrested and charged in August 2023, and he remained in custody until his sentencing on Monday, June 17th.  

Detective Chief Superintendent Gareth Rees, Head of Operations at the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “We take the monitoring of terrorism notification requirements very seriously. These are in place to help us identify and manage any potential risk posed by those previously convicted of terrorism offenders, ultimately keeping the public safe.  

Abid failed to comply with the terms of his notification order, so we’ve taken action to investigate that and brought him to justice.”  

Abid was sentenced on Wednesday, June 26th, to a two-year and three-month imprisonment, with an order to serve an additional 12 months on license.
