Investigation underway after India sees its worst railway tragedy in decades

The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, visited the eastern state of Odisha on 3 June and reviewed the rescue and relief efforts underway after the tragic train accident in Balasore, which occurred on 2 June. Modi visited the railway accident site and the hospital where the injured are undergoing intensive treatment.
Modi also chaired a high level meeting earlier to discuss the situation with other cabinet ministers in the wake of the train mishap in Odisha, which is termed to be the worst railway disaster in decades.
The Prime Minister’s Office tweeted: “PM Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to take stock of the situation in the wake of the train mishap in Odisha. Aspects relating to rescue, relief and medical attention to those affected were discussed in the review meeting.
“PM Narendra Modi is leaving for Odisha where he will review the situation in the wake of the train mishap.”
The 72-year-old leader said that people from various states who were travelling in the trains have been impacted by this monumental tragedy. While talking about the tragic loss of lives, he said that no stone will be left unturned to provide all possible medical help to those injured. He said that the government stands with the bereaved family members who have lost their loved ones.
Shortly after the accident made headlines, he had expressed his deep grief over the loss of innocent lives due to the tragic accident.
In a tweet, he said: “Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to Railway Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw and took stock of the situation. Rescue ops are underway at the site of the mishap and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.”
Modi said that instructions have been given to ensure proper and speedy investigation of the tragedy, and to take prompt and stringent action against those found guilty. He commended the efforts of the Odisha government, local administration and of the local people, especially youth, who worked through the night to assist ongoing efforts.
He also lauded the local citizens who turned up in large numbers for blood donation, to help those injured. He said that Railways is working to provide rescue and relief, as well as to ensure quick restoration of rail tracks. Interacting with the local authorities, personnel from the disaster relief forces and railways officials, Modi emphasised on ‘whole of government’ approach to mitigate the tragedy.
