Hundreds celebrate Diwali at Trafalgar Square in London

Hundreds of people from across the country gathered at Trafalgar Square to celebrate the auspicious Hindu festival of Diwali on 9 October.

Delivered in partnership with the Diwali in London committee, the festival of lights saw everyone having a joyful time and included performances by over 200 colourfully dressed dancers and performances by several communities including Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said Diwali signified “hope for a brighter tomorrow” during challenging times.

“Diwali on the Square is a wonderful and timely opportunity for Londoners to join in that spirit, celebrating our diversity and demonstrating the strength we draw from our many and varied communities,” he added.

Nitin Palan MBE FCA, on behalf of the Diwali in London committee, said: “I’m delighted that, after an absence of almost three years, Diwali in London was celebrated in its full fervour in Trafalgar Square. This year’s theme ‘In the joy of other lies our own’ was relevant for both Diwali and the world in general, as the need for kindness, harmony and selfless service could not be greater at this current time. On behalf of the Diwali in London team, we wish everyone lots of happiness and hope you are inspired to add happiness to the lives of others.”

Members of the public were able to enjoy a host of activities including Neasden Temple’s Diwali Festival Experience, dance workshops, yoga and meditation, Glimpse of the Goddesses, Sari and Turban tying, the Diwali Culture Zone, the Unity Marquee, Soho Theatre Comedy and the ever popular Children’s marquee, along with henna, face painting and a light up moment on the Square as the day turned to dusk.
