Eleven years after finding fame on television after appearing on ‘Educating Yorkshire’, Mushy has come a long way.
Musharaf Asghar was just 16 when he won everyone’s hearts after overcoming his severe stammer with the help of a teacher and made a speech during a school assembly, in front of all the staff and students, as well as the entire country.
He developed the stammer after suffering an asthma attack at the age of 5, which left him struggling at school – Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. However, his life changed after one of his teachers, Matthew Burton, suggested a unique solution to the problem.
After watching The King’s Speech, Burton suggested that Asghar read while listening to music through headphones to help him concentrate on the words. This worked like magic for the teenager as it helped him read an entire poem out loud, making viewers emotional.
Asghar has since triumphed in each phase of his journey. He recently shared an update on X (formerly Twitter) on the occasion of his 27th birthday, sharing a heartfelt reflection on his experiences on the show and the developments in his life since then with his fans, as reported by The Mirror.
He wrote: “Today I turn 27 years old. This means 11 years ago I was on Educating Yorkshire. I am so fortunate to live a life sharing the power of teachers.
“I am proud to be someone who stammers, something one teacher helped me to accept in the classroom. Thank you to everyone for the continuous support #EducatingYorkshire #PowerOfTeaching #ThankYou.”
The young man obtained his degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Huddersfield and gained recognition for his appearance on Celebrity First Dates in 2016, as he embarked on a quest to find love.
He now works as a keynote speaker and journalist in the Kirklees area, where he has been residing since he was a kid, and is also the location where documentary series was filmed.
