British Indian community platform visits Scotland to discuss diversity and inclusivity with a dash of comedy

Over 100 people from the Scottish Indian Community in Glasgow will attend the first Platform for Indian Democracy event, Ye Kaisi Democracy, in Scotland, co-hosted by Scottish Indians for Justice. Featuring acclaimed musician Rahul Ram and Social Satirist Sanjay Rajoura, the event will explore pressing issues impacting diversity and democracy in contemporary India using satire, comedy and debate.
The Platform for Indian Democracy, launched last year, plans to host a series of thought-provoking events on issues of plurality and democracy across Indian communities in the UK, the country’s largest ethnic minority group.
Raul Lai (pictured above), organiser of the Platform, explained: “We want to make sure that we are an inclusive movement that incorporates voices of communities all across the UK. Scotland and India have seen collaboration in education, energy, and culture, among other things.
There are strong links between Scotland and India, be it between higher education institutes or Scotland being a key Bollywood film destination.”
He added: “Glasgow has one of the largest South Asian populations in Scotland and a large Indian population. It is historically connected with India, especially in terms of culture, and has even been named the curry capital of Great Britain more than any other city in the UK.
Also, the city hosts many progressive groups, including Scottish Indians for Justice, with whom we want to work to bind the British Indian community.”
Umair Khan established Scottish Indians for Justice in 2019 as a voice for justice and shout against oppression and hatred
He said: “We are keen to partner with Platform for Indian Democracy as it upholds the same values we hold dear and hope that we can jointly foster the spirit of a love for India, our homeland, among the Indian diaspora in the UK while reminding all about our rich cultural heritage and its celebration of secular values and diversity.
The event on the 9th of February is one such endeavour to get the Scottish Indians together in a fun environment of music, cheer, and great Indian food so that our bonds are strengthened, and we continue our wonderful work, united with a common purpose.”
The Platform for Indian Democracy is a community platform for British Indians to deepen their connections with India. It mobilises the community to advocate for democratic values and ethical diplomacy in UK-India relations.
By engaging with policymakers and fostering dialogue, the Platform for Indian Democracy aims to influence UK foreign policy toward India based on shared democratic principles.
