A Muslim man from Bradford was left devastated after he realized that his regular tuna baguette from Morrisons had non-halal chicken in it.
Abdul Haibismillah, 23, bought the incorrectly packaged sandwich from Morrisons, in the Enterprise 5 Retail Park, off Five Lane Ends, last week.
He is an employee in the Idle area and has bought a meal deal from Morrisons almost every day for the last six months as it is close to his workplace.
Haibismillah said, “It’s quite disappointing, I felt disgusted.
“Because I’m Muslim, I don’t have anything unless it’s HMC (Halal Monitoring Committee) or halal, I always get tuna or a salad.
“I always get a baguette, tuna mayo, cucumber, from the packaging it told me tuna.”
The young man took the sandwich to work where he intended to eat it. After opening the package, he did not notice anything to be out of place as it was covered in the usual sauce.
After biting into the product, he was left confused and realised that something was wrong.
He added, “I’ve taken it back to work, opened it, it was all covered in mayo, I took my first bite, chicken, and I thought ‘am I being funny or is something wrong here’, I checked it.”
Upon inspecting the filling of the sandwich, Haibismillah was shocked to find that it was chicken instead of tuna and claimed that the chicken was not halal.
He said, “I wouldn’t go anywhere unless it’s HMC, it’s careless from their point of view.
“It’s different if it said chicken on there, I would have checked if it was halal on the back.”
The incident has discouraged Haibismillah from returning to the store as he raised the issue a day later but all he got in return were some vouchers for the mix-up which he said was “disgraceful”.
He added, “Obviously mistakes happen but this is just something else.”
The supermarket giant has since apologised for its mistake.
A spokesperson for Morrisons said, “We take the accuracy of our labelling extremely seriously.
“Unfortunately, we have not met our usual high standard and the product in question was incorrectly labelled.
“We have offered our sincere apologies to the customer and assured him we have taken necessary steps to prevent this from happening in future.”
