A Sikh cultural festival is being organised ahead of the Commonwealth Games this month
‘United Colours’, a festival to celebrate Sikh religion and culture, will be held in Walsall’s Bescot Stadium between 28-29 May.
Organised by Global Sikh Union in partnership with Birmingham 2022, the festival will host the Commonwealth Games Community Roadshow where people can participate in many kinds of sports activities.
This event has been organised after Birmingham 2022 was criticised by the Sikh community with Cllr Gurdial Singh saying, “Since the Games arrived, we have had little or no contact from the Games Organising Committee, we are literally missing from the Games Cultural programme, just like other South Asian communities like the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities.”
The event gives the visitors an opportunity to dive deep into Sikhism and Sikh culture as well as history. Birmingham 2022 lead community engagement manager Abigail Shervington adds, “The event will be heavily influenced by Sikh culture, it’s an inclusive model that celebrates their culture but it really is for everyone.”
