The third year of South Asian Heritage month revolves around the theme of ‘Journeys of Empire’. Set to take place from 18 July to 17 August this year, the website urges ‘everyone to organize their own events’ and celebrate South Asian culture, community and diversity in the UK.
According to the website: “From empires such as the Mughal, the Duranni, the Vijayanagar and the British, from indentured labourers forced to travel to the Caribbean and East Asia, and other migrants who travelled by choice to Africa and beyond, to the journeys that families made to the UK with just £3 in their pockets, we have all been affected by the journeys of empire.
The theme also reflects two major anniversaries taking place in 2022:
- 75th anniversary of the independence of India, Partition, and the creation of East and West Pakistan
- 50th anniversary of the expulsion of Ugandan Asians by Idi Amin.”
A calendar listing all the online events for the South Asian Heritage Month 2022 is available online where the team have listed ’31 events over 31 days’ with Focus Days dedicated to every South Asian country including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
People will get the opportunity to attend exhibitions, theatre, music, poetry workshops, film screenings, outdoor festivals, and much more. To get more information about the South Asian Heritage Month and the events being held near you, visit www.southasianheritage.org.uk.
