New Islamic weekend school launched to teach essential life skills

Rise Weekend School, a new Islamic weekend school set up to teach life skills including leadership and interpersonal skills, was inaugurated last weekend as part of UKIM Leeds project.

Organised by Dr Sabeeta Farpoqui, the school, which is located in Lingfield Centre in Moortown, is open from 10am to 2pm and will teach Tafseer of the Quran, seerah and Islamic history, morals and values and leadership skills. The project is a big success as the school has already reached its full capacity of admitting students.

Dr Farpoqui spoke of the idea behind the school saying, “I found that there is not much support for children from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities in the LS17 area outside of school. I had a few aims in mind when opening Rise Weekend School. I want to help children with their faith, to develop a strong identity and help them with any mental health issues they may be dealing with.”

The students at Rise Weekend School are being taught by experienced volunteers as well as parents, many of whom are primary school teachers as well.
