British Indian peer Lord Dolar Popat is backing a community fundraising event for a London hospice after last year’s gathering raised more than £70,000 for its services.

Lord Popat is supporting a fundraising evening organised by the Asian Foundation for Help and Kingsbury Lions Club to benefit St Luke’s Hospice in Harrow.

The hospice provides free specialist palliative and end-of-life care to people across Harrow and Brent, supporting more than 2,000 individuals and their families each year.

Lord Popat’s association with the hospice spans nearly four decades. He said he had been involved in the original vision of establishing a hospice that would offer free care to people in the local community.

He said he was proud to have supported St Luke’s for almost 40 years, highlighting the importance of its work for families facing some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Lord Popat also noted that the hospice serves two of London’s most diverse boroughs, which are home to a significant British Indian population.

He emphasised that the organisation’s compassionate services benefit both patients and their loved ones while helping ease pressure on the NHS by providing care in its wards and in patients’ homes.

Last year’s fundraising evening organised by the Asian Foundation for Help raised more than £70,000 for the hospice.

Established in 1983, the Asian Foundation for Help supports charitable initiatives in the UK and overseas. Its work includes assisting elderly, sick, blind and disadvantaged people, supporting educational projects in India and promoting Gujarati culture.

This year’s fundraising event is scheduled to take place at the Dhamecha Lohana Centre in South Harrow on Friday, October 23. Singer Supriya Joshi will perform live during the evening, helping bring the community together in support of the hospice.
