The Sikh Motorcycle Club UK has commemorated a historic milestone in Sikh and British motorcycling history with a special motorcycle ride in Manchester, marking 50 years since campaigner Gyani Sundar Singh Sagar, affectionately known as Gyani Ji, challenged restrictions on wearing a turban while riding a moped.
Organised by the club in partnership with Gyani Ji’s family, the commemorative ride honoured his determination to defend his religious identity and secure greater recognition of Sikh rights.
The event began at Strangeways Prison, where Gyani Ji was imprisoned in 1976 after refusing to pay fines for riding his moped while wearing a turban instead of a motorcycle helmet. Around 20 Sikh motorcyclists then travelled together to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara in south Manchester.
Before the ride, participants were able to view a replica of Gyani Ji’s original moped, providing a tangible link between his historic campaign and the experiences of Sikh motorcyclists today.
A representative of Sikh Motorcycle Club UK said the anniversary was an opportunity to celebrate Gyani Ji’s courage and commitment to his faith, identity and principles. The representative added that the ride brought together his family, Sikh riders and members of the wider community to recognise the sacrifices made to protect freedoms enjoyed by future generations.
The club also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Sikh values, brotherhood, community engagement and greater awareness of turban-wearing motorcyclists across the UK.
A Legacy Beyond Motorcycling
Gyani Ji’s contribution to Manchester’s Sikh community extended well beyond his campaign for turban rights on the road. He also challenged workplace restrictions after being denied employment as a Manchester bus conductor because of rules concerning turbans. His campaigning contributed to the city’s 1966 decision to permit turbans as part of the bus uniform.
He also helped establish one of Europe’s earliest Sikh gurdwaras in Manchester in 1953. Earlier this year, a blue plaque was unveiled at his former home in Old Trafford in recognition of his historical contribution.
Continuing the Mission Today
Founded in 2020, Sikh Motorcycle Club UK is a nationwide organisation dedicated to bringing Sikh motorcycle enthusiasts together, promoting Sikhi and raising awareness of turbaned riders.
The club supports charitable initiatives, community projects, Sikh events and public awareness campaigns, continuing a tradition of service and advocacy inspired by pioneers such as Gyani Ji.
The 50th-anniversary ride served as a tribute to his lasting legacy and a reminder of the importance of standing firm in one’s beliefs while working towards greater understanding, equality and inclusion in British society.
