Bradford-based fashion retailer Janan has received planning approval for a major two-storey extension to its flagship store and headquarters on Shearbridge Road.

The approval comes after the company submitted a revised planning application following the refusal of its previous proposal in 2025. Since then, Janan has worked closely with its professional team to respond to the concerns raised and provide Bradford Council with the additional information and technical details required.

Asif Khan, CEO of Janan Group, said:

“We are delighted to have secured planning approval. Following the previous decision, we worked closely with our professional team to address the queries raised and provide the additional information and technical detail needed to support the Council’s decision.

“This extension represents a significant investment not only in Janan, but also in Bradford. It will enable us to expand our flagship operation, create new employment opportunities and contribute further to the local economy.

“We also hope to attract more visitors from across the UK and internationally to Bradford, helping to further establish the city as a leading shopping destination.

“Bradford is our home and has been at the centre of Janan since the business was founded. As we continue to expand nationally and internationally, we want that growth to bring further investment and opportunities to the city.”

The project has been designed by Bradford-based Morf Architecture, working alongside Empace Civil & Structural Engineers and Consult North, which is providing quantity surveying and project management services.

The professional team has worked closely with Janan throughout the revised planning process and will continue to support the company as the development moves towards construction.

Ayaz Khan, Principal Architect at Morf Architecture, said:

“From the beginning, our vision has been to reflect Janan’s brand identity through the architecture, with a focus on elegance, a carefully considered façade and a distinctive arrival experience.

“The façade has been designed as a layered composition inspired by fashion, fabric and couture, creating depth while giving the building a refined and distinctive appearance.

“It is particularly rewarding to be involved in such a significant investment for an established Bradford business, and we look forward to taking the project through detailed design and into delivery.”

Professor Ummer Daraz, Managing Director of Empace Civil & Structural Engineers and Visiting Professor at the University of Bradford, added:

“The project presents a number of technical challenges, particularly as the existing store needs to remain operational throughout the construction process.

“The structural and construction strategy has therefore been carefully developed around this requirement, enabling the extension to progress while keeping disruption to the existing business to a minimum.

“The development will also provide an interesting engineering case study, and I look forward to sharing elements of the project with students at the University of Bradford.”

Janan will now continue working with its professional team to develop the scheme through detailed design and prepare for construction.
