The Professional Muslim Institute (PMI) hosted a moving Farewell Dinner in honour of Professor Shirley Congdon, as leaders from education, business, the judiciary and community organisations gathered to celebrate a career defined by service, integrity and inclusive leadership.
Held on Tuesday, 9th of December at Aagrah Midpoint, the evening brought together guests from across the UK, underlining the national respect Professor Congdon has earned over decades of public service.
The atmosphere was both celebratory and reflective, with colleagues and friends sharing memories, tributes and a sense of gratitude for her enduring impact.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a PMI Shield of Appreciation, recognising Professor Congdon’s outstanding leadership, her commitment to collaboration and her tireless support for education and professional development across Bradford and beyond.
Professor Congdon’s journey has been one of remarkable firsts. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, she became the first woman to hold the role in the institution’s history, leading the university through a period of transformation while placing inclusion, civic responsibility and student opportunity at the heart of her vision.
Her career has spanned senior roles across higher education, healthcare governance and public bodies, earning her a reputation as a principled leader who builds bridges between institutions and communities.
Earlier this year, the University of Bradford announced that Professor Congdon would be stepping down to spend more time with her family, bringing to a close a chapter that has left a lasting mark on the city and its academic landscape.
Her leadership style, collaborative, values-driven and deeply human, has been widely praised for strengthening trust between universities and the communities they serve.
During the evening, formal votes of thanks were delivered by community representatives such as, Reverend Nathan Javed, Dr Mohammed Iqbal, Professor Basma Ellahi, University of Chester and His Honour Judge Ahmed Nadim, Bradford Crown Court.
Each speaker paid tribute to Professor Congdon’s vision, humility and unwavering commitment to fairness, highlighting the respect she commands across sectors and faiths.
Dr Javed Bashir, founder of the Professional Muslim Institute, said: “This farewell dinner reflects the tremendous influence Professor Congdon has had on PMI and the wider community. Her leadership and unwavering support have inspired many, and her legacy will continue to shape our work for years to come.”
As PMI and guests from across the country marked this moment of transition, the evening served not as an ending, but as a celebration of a legacy that will continue to influence education, leadership and community engagement for generations.
Professor Congdon departs with deep affection, admiration and the gratitude of a city she has served with distinction.
