A Bradford food retailer has been fined after Trading Standards officers discovered food items more than five months past their use-by date.

On Friday 17 October 2025, at Bradford Magistrates’ Court, Taha Ali Said, of SAN FOODS, was fined £833, ordered to pay £1,898.88 in prosecution costs, and a £333 victim surcharge, after pleading guilty to six offences under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

Officers from West Yorkshire Trading Standards carried out a routine food standards inspection at the premises on 10 April 2025. During the visit, they found 10 food items past their use-by date, with some being more than 150 days out of date. The expired food included:

• Three packs of Kransno Debrecinske Parky, each 9 days out of date
• One pack of Farm Food Chicken Jumbo Sausage, 12 days out of date
• Two packs of Finest Quality Chicken and Chorizo Bites, each 13 days out of date
• One pack of Finest Quality Hot & Spicy Meatballs, 34 days out of date
• One pack of Finest Quality Garlic Sausage, 14 days out of date
• Two packs of Gazdovske Syrove Nite (non-English labelled), each 20 days out of date

Mr Said failed to respond to an interview under caution invitation from Trading Standards. However, after being served with a court summons, he submitted a written Food Safety Policy and evidence that staff had undertaken training in September 2025 as mitigation.

David Strover, Head of Trading Standards – Business Services, said: “Food businesses must ensure they carry out regular date checks on all perishable goods. They must invest in appropriate staff training and ensure that items with use-by dates are removed from sale once expired. 

These dates are applied to foods that are highly perishable and can quickly become unsafe to eat. Trading Standards will continue to take action against any businesses that flout the law.”

Councillor Sue Duffy, Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee, which oversees the work of Trading Standards, added: “Ensuring food safety is a fundamental responsibility of retailers. 

Selling food products past their use-by date not only undermines public confidence but poses potential health risks. West Yorkshire Trading Standards is committed to protecting consumers and holding businesses accountable.”
