Glasgow woman makes history as she becomes first ever female Argyll Arcade security guard

History has been made with Noor being appointed the first-ever female security guard at Glasgow’s famous Argyll Arcade shopping mall.
The 23-year-old Stirling University student from Pakistan has joined the ranks of the formerly all-male staff keeping an eye out for undignified behaviour in the upmarket jewellery centre which runs between Buchanan Street & Argyle Street.
The “beadles” as they are known, dressed in their distinctive uniform of top hat, frock coat and pin stripped trousers, are a familiar sight at the entrances to the arcade, which opened in the city almost 200 years ago.
Noor had previously worked on security at the nearby St. Enoch’s Centre but was delighted when the job at the Argyll Arcade came up. “Fewer teenagers to deal with!” she explained.
Although she wears almost every part of the traditional uniform including a tartan tie, shirt and waistcoat, she was granted a concession when it came to head gear and has swapped the top hat for a head scarf.
Noor is pictured here with colleague, Martin, 40, on Saturday (September 21) at the Argyle Street entrance to the Argyll Arcade.
Martin joked: “What Noor lacks in height, she makes up for in speed! And she has a black belt in karaoke which can come in useful.”
