Leading UK charity, Muntada Aid has started to distribute critical food parcels to internally displaced people (IDPs) in war-torn Mali through its Mali Emergency Appeal campaign. The number of internally displaced persons in Mali has quadrupled from 50,000 in March 2018 to nearly 240,000 in March 2020 due to violence and conflict and this number continues to grow.
The Mali War is an on-going conflict that started in January 2012 between the northern and southern parts of the country and throughout the war many people have been displaced and millions have struggled to find necessities such as food and water. Even before the war, Mali remained one of the poorest countries in the world. With social indicators among the lowest in the world, the country ranks 184 out of 189 countries.
The charity has now started providing monthly family food packs to over 2900 people fleeing war and living as IDPs outside Bamako, the country’s capital. Through the Mali Emergency Appeal campaign, the team will provide people with food packs that can support a family of 5 for up to a month. These vital food parcels constitute of wheat flour or rice (dependent on the country), pulses, cooking oil, dry milk powder, salt and sugar.
Naif Sheikh, CEO of Muntada Aid, commented, “The Muntada Aid team has been working in Mali for many years to help local communities by providing education and essential aid. As the war continues to displace more of the country’s population our food parcels are vital for families who have had no choice but to leave their homes and livelihoods”.
Muntada Aid has a long history of working in Mali. Over the years, the team has been working with local communities, providing education and food to those in need and urging the public to give generously so they can deliver further much-needed parcels.
