A British Sikh woman has been sentenced to death by a court in India for murdering her husband with the help of her secret lover.
38-year-old Ramandeep Kaur Mann from Derby was convicted of murdering Sukhjit Singh, 34, in front of their nine-year-old son while they were on a holiday in India.
Singh’s body was discovered in bed on September 2, 2016. Additional district government counsel Shree Pal Verma revealed that he was sleeping with his sons Arjun and Aryan when he was ruthlessly killed by his wife and her lover, Gurpreet, who was also his childhood friend.
Gurpreet was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000 (£98) by the court in Shahjahanpur on October 7.
On the day of the murder, Mann poisoned her entire family by preparing a pot of daal (lentils) for them. However, she was unaware that one of her sons had not eaten the daal that night.
During a hearing, Arjun told the court that his mother smothered his father with a pillow, after which Gurpreet proceeded to hit his head with a hammer. Gurpreet then took out a knife from his pocket and handed it to Mann, who slit her husband’s throat with it.
The prosecution stated that Singh, his wife, and their sons Arjun and Aryan visited his native place in Shahjahanpur in August 2016. Gurpreet, who was from Punjab, accompanied them on this visit.
Shortly after receiving her sentencing, Mann claimed that she was being “framed” by her husband’s family members, as reported by a jail official. She expressed her intention to appeal against capital punishment.
In response to this, the superintendent of Shahjahanpur district jail, Mijaji Lal, stated that two female inmates from the jail and a female constable have been assigned to monitor Mann.
When questioned about her motives for committing the murder, Mann stated that her husband had intended to sell his entire property and relocate to England. She believed that his family members were responsible for killing him and wrongly framing her, as reported by a jail official.
In response to the verdict, Singh’s mother, Vanshjeet Kaur, expressed her sentiments to reporters: “She said that she is innocent, and she will appeal against the capital punishment.”
