TikTok star Mahek Bukhari, her mother Ansreen and six others are facing a trial for the murder of two young men in a car crash which took place in southern England earlier this year.
Reports state that a jury was sworn in for the trial which began on Thursday, 20 October and will likely last for eight weeks.
Justice Pushpinder Singh Saini told the jury to approach the case “in a dispassionate way” as it was of a serious nature.
“The charges on this indictment concern allegations of murder and manslaughter. The alleged victims are two individuals you will come to know about and I will call them Saqib and Hashim,” the judge told the jurors, according to Birmingham Mail.
Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin and Saqib Hussain, both aged 21, were the victims of the alleged murder for which the defendants have been charged. Both of them died after their car, a Skoda Fabia, was involved in an accident near the Six Hills junction on the A46 on February 11.
The mother-daughter duo and other co-defendants including Natasha Akhtar of Alum Rock Road in Birmingham, Ameer Jamal of Catherine Street in Leicester and Sanaf Gulammustafa of Littlemore Close in Leicester – appeared in the dock at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday, reports have stated.
Other defendants in this case include Rekan Karwan of Tomlin Road in Leicester, Raees Jamal of Lingdale Close in Loughborough and Mohammed Patel of Braybrooke Road in Leicester.
All of them have denied committing manslaughter. It has also been reported that the prosecution will take several days to present its case, after which the barristers for each of the accused will be allowed to present their cases and witnesses.
