First Asian and Muslim president of the Law Society to visit Bradford

The first Asian and Muslim president of the Law Society of England and Wales, solicitor Lubna Shuja will visit Bradford this month.

The Bradford-born lawyer will be speaking at a special three-course dinner event at the Midland Hotel Princes Ballroom on Friday, 21 October.

‘An Audience with Lubna Shuja’ is being hosted by Nasreen Karim founder and partner and will be attended by judges, solicitors and leading businesses at the Bradford based Platinum Partnership Solicitors.

Nasreen said, “We are delighted to be welcoming Lubna to Bradford. She is truly an inspirational figure and our audience will be keen to hear of her journey and her aspirations for the future.”

Lubna added, “At school, being a lawyer was never something I thought about. I didn’t know any lawyers and did not think someone, from a working-class background like me, could have any chance of a legal career.

“I managed to get decent A-level grades and a school friend then suggested I should do a Law degree as it would offer good career options. I could hardly contain my excitement when I managed to get a place at university studying Law.”

Lubna has become only the seventh female president of the Law Society this week.

She qualified as a solicitor in 1992 and is presently a sole practitioner at Legal Swan Solicitors in Birmingham, a firm she established in 2007. Before setting up her own firm, Lubna worked in a high street firm in West Yorkshire for 14 years undertaking litigation and personal injury work.

Lubna has been a member of the Law Society Council since 2013 and represents the interests of sole practitioners. She is also a member of the Law Society Board, the chair of the Strategic Litigation Group and a member of the Conduct committee.
