Prime Minister of Pakistan travels to London to attend the Queen’s state funeral

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, travelled to London on Saturday, 17 September ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral which took place on Monday.

Sharif, paid his respects to the Queen on behalf of himself and the country, and attended a reception hosted by King Charles III on Sunday.

The funeral of the Queen took place at 11:00 BST on Monday at Westminster Abbey in London and was attended by several prominent royal family members as well as politicians from across the world.

According to reports, Sharif will hold meetings with political leaders during the visit and meet his brother Nawaz Sharif to discuss the current political and economic situation in Pakistan as the country still battles the grim situation it faces after the floods, among other issues.

Later on Monday, Sharif will also travel to New York to address the UN General Assembly session that will take place on September 23 before returning to Pakistan.

Earlier on Friday, Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi and Sharif separately visited the British High Commission to offer their condolences after the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

The leaders met British High Commissioner Christian Turner and expressed grief over the Queen’s death on behalf of the government and the people of Pakistan. They also signed the condolence book placed at the High Commission.

The PM said that the Queen will continue to be a symbol of unity and brotherhood besides her services for the public interest. In August, he had to cancel his planned visit to London as the flood situation in the country became worse, devastating the lives of many.
