British Asian fans pay tribute after tennis star Roger Federer announces retirement

Regarded by many as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Roger Federer on 15 September, announced his retirement through a sentimental audio message posted on social media.

With a career spanning over 24 years, Federer played 1500 matches and won 20 Grand Slam titles. The Swiss tennis star saw massive fame and love from his fans come his way as he re-defined the sport with his unmatched sportsmanship and humility.

After he broke the news of his retirement, many expressed shock as they hoped he would continue to play, despite his knee injury after losing at last year’s Wimbledon. The 41-year-old will officially retire after playing in next week’s Laver Cup in London.

Many of his fans, including several prominent sports figures, came forward to pay tribute to him.

Former Scottish cricketer, Majid Haq wrote: “Thanks for all the amazing memories to my favourite Tennis player of all time @rogerfederer 20 Grand Slams with wins on all surfaces & to win when Nadal & Djokovic were at their peak was phenomenal. Looking forward to seeing you play next weekend.”

Another fan wrote: “When you talk of finesse, skills, technicality in tennis, it’s Roger Federer. He made me love and watch tennis.”

British Asian tennis star, Abdul Sammad Ahmed expressed sadness over the news by reposting Federer’s note and wrote: “The greatest of all time.”

“This is sad, Roger, I would love to watch you playing many more years, but, I know that is part of the life. Congratulations for your wonderful career, and, thanks for all the magic. Tennis will always miss you. I hope that this new chapter of your life be amazing. #RForever”, a fan posted on Twitter. Federer has received several such tributes from his fans all over the world, remembering his contribution to the sport and wishing him the best for his life ahead.
